Asheville, where the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers meet, has evolved into a year-round resort area with architectural gems serving as a backdrop for a lively cultural scene and scores of restaurants from grand to down-home. On the grandest scale of all, Asheville boasts the opulent 250-room Vanderbilt Estate, now a major draw with a restaurant and winery on expansive grounds. Asheville's Spruce Street is where Author Thomas Wolfe's mother ran the Old Kentucky Home boarding house, although the down-home meals she once served are far cry from Asheville's current culinary diversity embracing everything from ostrich to black-eyed peacakes. Downtown, Cats & Dawgs serves Vienna beef hot dogs and catfish sandwiches, while Flying Frog Café dishes up French, Cajun and Indian fare in an artistic setting. Serving cuisines from Asian to vegetarian, many Asheville restaurants also feature live music from jazz to bluegrass.
